PALM TREE DISEASE

BUTT ROT (OF PALMS):  Ganoderma Butt Rot has attacked several palm trees within our Community.  The visible signs of this disease are either a small white “button" or a reddish-brown mushroom-like growth on the trunk. There is no cure or preventative treatment currently available. The affected trees need to be removed as soon as possible to prevent the spread of the disease.  Removal of the affected trees is more involved than just cutting them down.  Only someone familiar with the procedure should be allowed to work on them. In addition, the recent frosts have damaged many palm trees, turning the leaves yellow or brown.  A certified landscaper, many of whom have attended a recent seminar on the disease, can assist you in determining whether it is Ganoderma or the frost that is affecting your trees.  If your landscaper is not familiar with this disease, please insist that they learn about it.
